| Dedication
The call of Rev. Evans to succeed the Founder, Rev. Dr. William Decatur Cook, was the wisest move in this church’s history. Rev. Evans became the second pastor elect on July 15, 1930. His response to the officers who interviewed him was typical. He wrote: “I am under a solemn promise to Rev. Cook--made to him before his death--to the effect that, if it was his wish and the will of the church that I succeed him as pastor, I would come to Chicago and put myself on the altar of service.” Rev. Evans was a great man. He was a great preacher, philosopher, Bible Expositor, poet, a fine editor, a humanitarian’s humanitarian, a splendid counselor, and a prophet sent from God. Metropolitan Community Church thrived under Rev. Evans pastorate causing him to be called a “builder.” Therefore, it seems most appropriate to remember the “builder” as we opened the first bookstore on Sunday, August 25, 2002, in the history of Metropolitan.
